The Red Head Tapajos is scientifically known as Geophagus sp. This Cichlid is small and peaceful, with its roots in Brazil’s Rio Tapajos River in South America. The fish obtained its name from the name of the river where it originates.

The beautiful fish species is rare yet popular among aquarists. They add a bold red color and bling to aquariums, making them perfect for interior décor. The fish love areas with low lighting and warm, acidic, soft, and clean water when sifting food in sand.

The fish have a habit of eating soil and thus need a sandy substrate in the aquarium or fish tank. They sift sand through their gills to sieve out food particles for consumption. However, they do not like gravel, something that can cause choking in the fish or cause them not to eat.

Tapajos love living in schools of at least 4 fish, but you can only keep a pair for breeding purposes. The fish can grow to a maximum adult size of 6 inches.

The captive fish breed thrives in soft water with a pH range of 5.0 to 7.5 and a temperature range of 70 to 82 F. Despite their origins, Tapajos have become popular in the aquarium and aquaculture business.

Red Head Tapajos get along well with most Cichlids that have their origins in South America, including larger tetras and catfish. They love living in large groups, including community tanks. However, they are commonly bred in biotope or species-specific aquariums. They can also be kept with other Cichlids.

When choosing tankmates for the Tapajos, size is important because they can live peacefully with larger fish species. Popular tankmates for the Tapajos include the Keyhole Cichlid, L333 Porto de Moz, and Red Spotted Severum fish.

Red Head Tapajos fish thrive on live plants such Anubias with attachments to driftwood. Apart from live food, the fish also feed on pellets, flakes, and frozen food.

Had to share

Now I need a bigger tank!
Wow, has 5B impressed an old fish farmer and Pet shop owner who decided later in life to share the hobby with 11 grand kids. First of all communication and questions answered impeccable as my whole customer service experience has been. Now Let's talk about the fish! The main reason I contacted 5B was there appeared to be fairly priced for the sizes offered and i want a heard
6 Geophagus Red Heads as I knew they were slow growing I was going small and growing them out in a 55. When they arrived they were all about 3" already colored beautiful. Way bigger than I expected. Probably saved me a year of growth time for a great price. Only problem is now I need a much bigger tank soon! That is a great problem to have. We talked about some more bottom feeders and got some great clown and kuhli loaches and a few Corys. When my order showed there was even the cutest little rubber lip pleco including that we had spoke of but didn't order. They told me it was a thank you gift! I will be looking forward to my next order for my bigger 150/180gal. Tank soon. Don't hesitate to order from this growing business. I know I won't. They're great, Mike in Ohio
