Sand loaches, commonly referring to Schistura species like the Ornate Sand Loach (S. kohchangensis), are small (1.5–3 inches), active freshwater fish from Southeast Asia that thrive in high-oxygen, flowing water with rocky, sandy substrates. They are,,, generally, carnivorous, feeding on live or frozen foods like bloodworms and mosquito larvae in captivity.
- Size and Behavior: These are small, bottom-dwelling fish, with the Ornate Sand Loach typically reaching only 1.5 inches, while others like the Red-tail sand loach (S. mahnerti) reach about 3 inches. They are known for quick, darting movements and, while sometimes shy initially, become active, personable, and even territorial over, hiding spots.
- Diet: As carnivores, they require small, meaty foods, including frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They may accept high-quality sinking pellets, but prefer live or frozen foods.
- Habitat Requirements: They prefer well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water with rocky, sandy, or gravel substrates. A "hillstream" setup with strong filtration is ideal, although they are more tolerant of varied conditions than some species, including living in, warmer (68–78°F or 20–25.5°C) water.
- Tank Mates: They can be kept in community tanks with other, small, peaceful fish, but they can be territorial with their own species, requiring plenty of hiding spaces.
